‘We’ve discussed…’ Rob Edwards revealed how João Gomes has dealt with Man Utd transfer rumours

Newly appointed Wolves manager Rob Edwards has spoken about how potential Manchester United target, João Gomes, has coped with the recent links of a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been searching far and wide for their newest recruit in the midfield, with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ João Gomes appearing as a standout name who could make the move in 2026.

Rúben Amorim has been heavily reliant on Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro to be the engine of the United team, as the remaining midfielders do not appear to be suited to Amorim’s persistent 3-4-3 system.

Kobbie Mainoo is not seen as the correct profile to earn a start in the midfield duo. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte, who signed from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 for £42m, has underwhelmed since his arrival, despite previously playing under Amorim at Sporting CP.

United’s newest potential solution, João Gomes, has spent this season in an underperforming Wolves side, who sit 20th in the Premier League, yet to register a win. The 24-year-old is in his fourth season at Wolves and is now seeing his newest manager, Rob Edwards, enter the dressing room.

Edwards has come forward to address Gomes’ links to United, with relegation looking certain for Wolves and a move for the Brazilian midfielder seeming inevitable.

Rob Edwards opens up about João Gomes rumours to Man Utd

Gomes could be an excellent fit for United with his quick feet, firm use of his body and intelligent moves in tight spaces. Relegation to the Championship seems far too insulting for a player of Gomes’ ability; therefore, a cheaper transfer fee could be on the table for the Brazilian.

Edwards admitted that the future of the midfielder has been discussed since he arrived at his new club, although the player is unfazed, as quoted by Liam Keen.

Edwards said, “We’ve spoken about stuff (recruitment), but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”

With the Brazilian midfielder already impressing his new manager, Gomes is likely to be a crucial factor in Wolves’ fixtures this season as they remain determined to stay in England’s top flight.

Fans can be thankful that the rumours have not directly impacted Gomes, which contrasts the situation of Carlos Baleba, who has underperformed for Brighton & Hove Albion since his rumoured big-money summer move to United.

Man Utd’s track record of Premier League-proven players

Amorim’s side saw major changes in the attacking line, making significant investments in proven players in the league, bringing in both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Gomes is potentially the next player to be signed as part of United’s new transfer strategy, as he may be a more ideal option than other potential players from different leagues.

Furthermore, Gomes would cost significantly less than other potential options such as Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, as Wolves would likely be forced to sell in the event of relegation.

Additionally, Gomes would be walking into a familiar environment with Cunha’s profile next to him, given that the pair would already have a good relationship from their time at the Molineux.

Gomes is seen as a replacement for his fellow countryman, Casemiro, who appears to be coming towards the end of his contract at United. Gomes would be an excellent fit for Amorim’s side as they continue to strengthen and re-establish themselves as a Champions League-level club.
