West Brom boss explains “super important” trait he’s already seen from Toby Collyer, Rúben Amorim will be pleased

West Brom boss Ryan Mason has explained one trait he has already seen from Toby Collyer following the midfielder’s loan from Manchester United.

Toby Collyer recently joined West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan from Manchester United, with Rúben Amorim looking to give some of his fringe players much-needed first-team experience.

After the club finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final last season, there is no need for a massive squad at Old Trafford. They will not be playing European football across 2025/26, so there will be fewer opportunities for younger players.

While Collyer is highly-rated internally and is known to be an incredible runner in the middle of the park, with Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Manuel Ugarte all ahead of them, there is little space for him to play.

Collyer’s loan to the Championship side will give him vital first-team experience within the English football pyramid before returning to United in 2026.

West Brom boss is a fan of Collyer’s work ethic

Collyer made his debut for West Brom on the weekend, coming on for the final four minutes of their 3-2 win over Wrexham, although it’s expected that once he’s up to speed, he will become part of their starting XI.

The Baggies’ boss, Ryan Mason, spoke to MailSport’s Nathan Salt over the weekend about Collyer, explaining that he’s already noticed the player’s love for football and hard-working nature.

“Good kid, humble, wants to work, wants to be part of it, and you can feel that as soon as you speak to him,” Mason explained.

“He wants to play football, loves football, and that’s super important. We want those types of people in the building who want to work, put in the work, and be part of something.”

Amorim will appreciate Collyer’s love for football

Amorim already knows Collyer well and has previously praised him, but injuries prevented the 21-year-old from making a significant first-team impact at Old Trafford last campaign.

However, the United boss has also been known to be a huge fan of players who are keen and hungry to learn more about the game, with Benjamin Šeško’s obsession with football an example of this.

“The guy is always thinking about football. He’s really obsessed by that, and that is a good thing because you don’t have to think about that aspect with that young guy,” Amorim stated on the Slovenian last week.

“I don’t need to tell Ben, ‘this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready for every game, it’s like do-or-die’.

“With that guy, I have not that concern. I have the opposite, [he needs to] enjoy [himself] a little bit! He’s listening, and he wants to perform, so that is really good.”

With Collyer hungry to prove himself to those at Old Trafford and across English football and aiming to break into United’s first team next season, Amorim will be keeping a close eye on the English talent.
