“Went well…” – Lecce president breaks silence on Manchester United meeting over Patrick Dorgu
Manchester United met with Italian club Lecce this week to discuss the potential transfer of 20-year-old talent Patrick Dorgu.
Manchester United have prioritised signing a new left wing-back for Ruben Amorim during the January transfer window, as defensive issues continue to hinder their performances.
The current options for the position – such as Diogo Dalot, Tyrell Malacia and Noussair Mazraoui – are not good enough for what Amorim wants.
In recent days, the club has been strongly linked with Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, who is seen as a good fit for Amorim’s requirements in the left wing-back role.
United are prepared to offer up to £30 million, including bonuses, for Dorgu, reports have stated—an increase from their earlier valuation.
The Reds met with the Italian club on Tuesday to discuss further details about a potential deal.
What Leece president said after United meeting
Lecce’s president, Saverio Sticchi Damiani, spoke to Sky Italia after conducting the meeting with the Premier League club.
He detailed that their “priority” is the sporting results on the pitch and that they want to keep their most important players, including Dorgu.
“The meeting went well, it was a cordial meeting,” he explained. “For us it is a satisfaction to sit at the table with Manchester United and talk about a player who comes from our Primavera.
“It means that it is a significant growth path for the club and we are very happy about it.
“We have explained to Manchester that our desire at the moment is to try to keep our squad unchanged, keeping all the big names, especially Dorgu.
“We tried to make it clear that for us it is an important appointment with the history this year.
“We could reach the third historic salvation. Although we are flattered by the offer from Manchester, for us the priority is the sporting result which is fundamental.”
This goes against recent reports which suggested Dorgu had a gentleman’s agreement with the Italian club to be allowed to leave if a big club came in with a reasonable offer.
Ultimately, it appears that Lecce are doing all they can to secure the best deal possible, which is understandable, and United need to decide the best course of action.
