André Onana has cast doubt over his future at Manchester United after poor performances have left him out of favour under Rúben Amorim.
Manchester United could be set to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer as Rúben Amorim continues his overhaul of the team’s spine at Old Trafford.
With Matheus Cunha already signed and growing confidence around securing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim is also targeting reinforcements in midfield and up front.
Meanwhile, André Onana’s future at the club is uncertain. Despite showing flashes of brilliance during his two seasons at United, he has struggled for consistency, leading to speculation that the club may look for a replacement if the Cameroonian moves on.
Onana, 29, has faced criticism for frequent dips in form, which have at times eroded the defence’s confidence in him.
Onana casts doubt over his future at United
Earlier this year, reports detailed that Onana was in talks with Saudi Pro League side NEOM, although it was later revealed that the Middle Eastern side had little interest in completing a deal.
However, Onana’s future remains one that’s up for debate, with United reportedly interested in the possibility of securing Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez as a replacement.
Currently, United’s players are enjoying their holidays after the end of the 2024/25 season, and are expected to return to Carrington in mid-July for the start of pre-season training.
Speaking to Africa Top Sports journalist Stéphane Bassalia Ouattara, Onana said, “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!” when asked if he will be leaving United this summer, further throwing his future into doubt.
Van der Saar urges United to stick by Amorim
Former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar knows Onana well, having been CEO of Dutch club Ajax while Onana was Erik ten Hag’s No. 1 at the club.
Speaking to talkSPORT recently, the United legend and former Dutch shot-stopper urged United to stick by Onana, as he knows how good the player can be and is convinced that the 29-year-old will perform to a higher standard next season.
“I’ve known him already for a long time,” Van der Saar said. “He spent four or five years at Ajax. I trained with him and saw him coming.
“He has great strengths. He’s athletic. He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I’m sure he’s going to get over it.
“Sometimes it’s not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is. But I’ve seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I’m sure he’s going to be fine for next season.”
