Rúben Amorim has made his feelings on Manchester United’s attacking line clear following Alejandro Garnacho’s £40 million move to Chelsea.
Alejandro Garnacho departed Manchester United in the summer, joining Premier League rivals Chelsea in a £40 million deal.
The 21-year-old first broke into United’s senior squad under Ralf Rangnick, became a regular under Erik ten Hag, and continued to feature following Rúben Amorim’s arrival.
But after struggling to fit into Amorim’s system and with tensions mounting after the Europa League final, Garnacho decided to leave.
To replace him and a few other departing forwards, such as Marcus Rashford and Antony, United brought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. At the same time, Benjamin Šeško replaced Rasmus Højlund up front.
Amorim makes attacking mentality feelings clear
Ahead of United’s fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim has been speaking with several media outlets surrounding his team’s good recent form, especially their increased attacking cohesion.
Amid the major changes in attack during the summer, Amorim was asked by Men in Blazers about the upgrades, particularly Mbeumo and Cunha.
It was put to the head coach that United had one of the slowest attacks last season, and Amorim was asked how the bite, hunger, and velocity of the attacking have changed everything for the club this season.
“Not just that, but the mentality of these two players,” Amorim immediately added. “Cunha is a maverick. Cunha does things that it’s hard to find in some players, because he plays with the ball, but he has an aura that can do something to the opponent’s heads, and that is really important.
Bryan is really direct, and we missed that last year. The way every time we have the ball, and you can see in the fourth goal that we scored against Brighton, you can sense when the ball is going to our defender, he’s already running to position.
“And these kind of things, small things that people don’t see, are massive to turn our team into a more dangerous team.”
Amorim grateful for mentality upgrade
During what is a really rough time for Manchester United, Amorim’s immediate want to point out the mentality upgrade the club has received shows a lot about his feelings regarding the previous holders of the attacking line.

It is no secret that Garnacho and Amorim fell out on a major scale following the Europa League final last season. With the United boss appreciating Cunha and Mbeumo’s mentality so highly, this suggests he felt the mindset of those such as Garnacho was not up to the club’s standard.
Mbeumo is United’s top scorer so far this season with five goals to his name, and has just won the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October. Cunha, although he has only one goal for United, has been praised for his tireless displays in Red and is a firm fan favourite.
While last season felt as if there was a struggle to understand where the goals and domination were going to come from with respect to United’s attack, there is no doubt that from now on, Amorim can rely on Cunha and Mbeumo to produce when the side needs it most.
