“We instantly saw…” Mason Mount raves about three Manchester United Academy stars who stunned him in training

Mason Mount has been raving about three of Manchester United’s recent Academy graduates whom he has been watching and helping in training.

Mason Mount’s time at Manchester United since he signed from Chelsea in 2023 has not gone as swimmingly has many would have hoped.

Although he signed for the Old Trafford club with a lot of promise, he has since missed 50 fixtures in just under two seasons through injury, having made just 38 appearances for United so far.

However, Rúben Amorim has been incredibly complimentary of the 26-year-old since he became head coach of the club in November, proclaiming the player is a “proper footballer” after watching him in training toward the end of last year.

Since his return from injury at the end of March, Mount has made six appearances off the bench but is yet to start in 2025, with Amorim being incredibly cautious about his return.

Mount raves about Amass’ training displays

With Mount returning to the squad, there have been many reports stating that he has been an integral part in embedding young United Academy players within the senior team, and has heaped praise on young left-back Harry Amass.

Amass made his debut for United against Leicester last month and has since made three further appearances, including starts against Newcastle and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

“Harry is a top lad,” Mount explained to club media. “He obviously came into the squad last season and trained with us a few times, and we instantly saw what he could do. He wasn’t scared.

“He came into training, he was getting the ball and was very good technically. He was confident, and that’s what we like. As a young player coming into the squad, you want them to be confident enough to step up.

“He’s been brilliant. I see a lot of potential in him. Obviously, I didn’t come on in the game [where Amass made his debut], but seeing him come on, seeing him make his debut was very, very special. I was very proud of him.

“So, after the game, I went over to him and just said well done, I thought he done really well in the game, and there’s plenty more to come from him.”

Mount further impressed with two Academy midfielders

Speaking further, Mount also made sure to praise Academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer, praising the latter for his dominant style of football. Mount has seen both players make their debuts for United since he signed under Erik ten Hag.

“I spoke to Kobbie quite a bit in pre-season and last season,” Mount said.

“You can see what he’s come in and done. He’s a very, very good player, and he’s come to me a few times, just asking about positioning in games, and I’ve given my opinion on where he should go, and that’s all he needed!

“The same with Tobes [Collyer]. He’s come in, wanted to be dominant on the ball, wanting to get the ball in every position on the pitch. That’s exactly what we want in games. No matter what game you’re playing – if it’s a derby – I know that he’ll come on and want the ball.

“I see potential in a lot of the young lads coming up to train with us, so it’s amazing for them to come in and be in and around it. It’s really exciting going forward into this season, next year and moving on. It’s a great many years to come that I think will be very successful.”
