Senne Lammens has confirmed that Manchester United have solved a major issue that was pointed out by Cristiano Ronaldo towards the end of his second stint at the club.
Senne Lammens made an excellent start to his Manchester United career by keeping a clean sheet on debut against Sunderland as United secured a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford last weekend.
Lammens looked assured against the newly promoted side and didn’t at all look phased by the pressure that comes with being United’s goalkeeper.
With Andre Onana leaving the club on loan for the rest of the season and Altay Bayindir struggling to assert himself in a United shirt, Lammens looks set to become United’s new starting goalkeeper.
United explored the possibility of signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in the summer, but ultimately decided to push ahead with a deal for Lammens before eventually completing a deal on Deadline Day to sign the Belgian shot-stopper from Royal Antwerp.
Lammens opens up on Carrington renovations
Manchester United recently completed their £50 million renovation of Carrington training complex, a long-overdue upgrade of United’s training facilities.
In a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, which eventually led to his Manchester United exit, Cristiano Ronaldo slammed United for their lack of investment in Carrington, suggesting it was significantly outdated.
“Nothing changed. Not only the jacuzzi, the pool, even the gym. Even some points of technology, the kitchen, the chefs – who I appreciate, lovely people! I thought I would see different things, technology, infrastructure,” Ronaldo said to Piers Morgan.
Lammens has recently talked about United’s training ground in a far more positive tone than Ronaldo did following much-needed renovations. “We have everything here to succeed, to help us in our way of training and to get ready for the games. So that’s not an excuse,” Lammens said on MUTV.
“It’s been very nice. It’s also a step up from being in Antwerp. When I came here for the first time, it was really eye-opening so, yeah, it’s very nice,” Lammens said as he compared Carrington to his old club’s facilities.
Lammens has everything to be United’s long-term no.1
It’s still very early days, but Senne Lammens has everything to be Manchester United’s no.1 for many years to come.
Last season at Antwerp, he was one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe. While he will be facing better finishers in the Premier League, his data was so good that even a significant drop off of 50% would still statistically make him one of the best shot-stoppers in the league.
From corners, he can sometimes struggle, but is generally a competent cross-claimer in open play, as he showed against Sunderland. He also showed on his United debut that he is comfortable coming off his line and sweeping.

On the ball, he is an outstanding long-range passer, but is also comfortable playing short passes as well as chipped passes out wide to the full-backs to bypass the opposition high-press.
Having signed Lammens for an initial £18.2 million, Lammens could prove to be one of United’s best value-for-money signings in recent times.
