“We exchanged phone numbers…” – Ruben Amorim details moment no one noticed during Manchester United vs FCSB
Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 victory over FCSB in their final Europa League group match on Thursday night, sealing a spot in the round of 16.
Ruben Amorim’s side controlled the game and secured a third straight win for the first time this season. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, they couldn’t find the breakthrough before halftime.
Alejandro Garnacho and Amad came on at the break, adding energy and pace. Garnacho struck the post early, and Amad’s quick throw-in led to the opener—Christian Eriksen fed Kobbie Mainoo, who crossed for Diogo Dalot to tap in.
Mainoo then capped a strong performance with a composed finish from Garnacho’s cross. United stayed in control, played with confidence, and kept a clean sheet.
The Reds will face one of Galatasaray, Real Sociedad, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland in the next round of the competition.
Amorim details conversation with Charalambous
On the pitch after full-time, Amorim was seen in close conversation with FCSB’s manager Elias Charalambous.
The United boss was asked about this in his post-match press conference and explained the simple interaction, as well as the fact he exchanged numbers with the Cypriot coach.
“It was just a congratulations about the game, I said good luck,” Amorim detailed.
“Before the match we changed phone [numbers], to talk about football, normal stuff.”
Unbeaten United must focus on Europa League
FCSB probably provided the least challenging game for United in the Europa League so far this season but the Reds still had to secure the win.
In fact, United are now the only unbeaten team in the competition heading into the knockout stages.
Things have been extremely stop-start for the team this season. This was their first time winning three on the bounce.
Yet, despite their rocky form under Amorim, they must be viewing this competition as a serious chance of silverware.
The new format now means that no Champions League teams drop into the competition and so United will not face any teams who are clearly better than them.
Amorim will want the team to find consistency in the Premier League but it is quickly becoming clear how important the Europa League will be in their chances on European qualification next season.
