Wayne Rooney has revealed why it would “make sense” for interim manager Michael Carrick to stay in charge of Manchester United next season as the permanent boss
Michael Carrick has turned around what fans expected to be a disappointing season at Manchester United with the race for Champions League football very alive.
Carrick is undefeated as United manager winning four games out of five in the Premier League and finally finding some rhythm in the squad.
The 44-year-old was dropped in the deep end facing Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two games but came out victorious in both, finding consistency with the squad.
The former Middlesborough manager has certainly boosted his chances of a permanent role next season and has earned the backing of Man United legend, Wayne Rooney.
United’s all time leading goalscorer has made a case to why keeping Carrick in charge would be a beneficial option for all parties.
Rooney explains why keeping Carrick works
Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney explained: “We’ve been there and tried different managers – (Jose) Mourinho, (Louis) Van Gaal, (Erik) ten Hag and (Ruben) Amorim – and for me Carrick makes sense.”
He added: “Not because we’ve played together and we’re friends, but because he’s a real calming influence. Having someone there who knows the club and cares for the club makes a big difference.Michael is managing the whole squad and managing them well.”
“Sometimes We’re quick to overlook what’s right there in front of you and say we’ve got this manager from Turkey or from Spain who is going to come in and do this, when they have no interest in the football club.”
“At least (with Carrick) this will give the foundations for the club to keep building when in two or three years’ time the infrastructure will be back at the club.”
Carrick has proven in his short time already that the United DNA is very real and plays a pivotal role in the performances of the team.
Too often under Ruben Amorim, United heads would drop immediately after conceding, but United’s performances against Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham show the newly found drive to push to the very end.
Carrick’s tactical advantages
Not only would Carrick offer more time to analyse which profiles could be the best recruits over the summer window, he also has a great understanding of the modern game from both a playing and managerial perspective.
United know that they need to look at a midfield replacement for Casemiro who has already announced his departure, but Manuel Ugarte could also be leaving after an underwhelming spell at the club.

Carrick has got the best out of the hand that he has been dealt so far, so a transfer window would only see the side grow stronger.
For now, United’s focus remains on securing Champions League football for next season as a trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium awaits in United’s next Premier League fixture.
