Wayne Rooney reveals Michael Carrick backroom ambitions after ‘going to Barbados’ with Man Utd interim boss

Wayne Rooney has discussed Manchester United’s recent appointment of Michael Carrick, as well as making a shock statement regarding his backroom staff.

Manchester United have been weighing up their options regarding their vacant managerial position since sacking Ruben Amorim over a week ago.

The Reds have opted to hire Michael Carrick as a caretaker manager until the end of the season, where they will then decide on a permanent appointment.

Before the appointment of Carrick, the Reds were under the instructions of interim boss Darren Fletcher, who unfortunately fell short of victory in both their Premier League and FA Cup bouts.

Following the reports that Carrick has been brought in as a caretaker, Wayne Rooney has discussed the appointment, as well as making a shock admission regarding Carrick’s backroom staff.

Rooney’s ‘no-brainer’ statement

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Rooney was asked about whether he would join Carrick’s backroom staff, to which he made a shock ‘no-brainer’ statement.

“Of course I would! I think it’s a no-brainer if that’s the situation.

“I think what the club needs is people around the place, whether Michael goes in, whether Fletch, John O’Shea, myself, you need people around who know the football club, (people like) Roy Keane.

“Having people who know the club, who care for the club, people who understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player. I think that’s where the club needs to be.

United’s forgotten identity

Rooney went on to say that he had recently spoken to the newly appointed caretaker manager and admitted that they both felt as though the club had lost its identity.

The English pundit said, “We spoke earlier in this season about how it’s lost that identity, that family feel. I think it’s a great opportunity to bring the spirit of Manchester United back into the club.”

As well as this, on the BBC Sport’s ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’, the 40-year-old former Red revealed that he was on holiday with Carrick only last week.

He said: “I was with him in Barbados last week! So obviously none of us saw this coming. Michael is a very clever person, and he’ll command respect from the dressing room.”

Clearly, Carrick understands that United’s identity has gone missing over the past decade, and hopefully, he can help them to rediscover it over the next six months.
