Wayne Rooney picked out three ‘fantastic’ Manchester United stars who impressed him during their 1-0 loss to Arsenal. He also highlighted the role of debutant Benjamin Sesko.
Manchester United kicked off their Premier League campaign with a tough fixture at home to last season’s runners-up, Arsenal, which unfortunately resulted in a 1-0 defeat.
Ruben Amorim’s side have many positives to take from the proceedings, despite the loss, with most of the talking points surrounding the impressive debutants, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
The Red Devils came close to snatching a result against the Gunners, with Patrick Dorgu’s clip of the post being the closest that United came to a goal.
After the match, United legend Wayne Rooney spoke on his show for BBC Sport, where he talked up many of the positives, including three ‘fantastic’ stars in particular.
Rooney’s three impressive stars
The 39-year-old told BBC Sport: “Yeah, obviously, disappointed in the result, but I think there were lots of positives within the game.
“I think Cunha looked fantastic. I loved the way he picked the ball up, and he was driving at players. You know, playing with the freedom and creativity which maybe has been lacking in the last few years.
“I thought Amad when he came on, was again fantastic. We know what he can do. Mbeumo was in and out of the game; I felt he started really well, came out [of] it for a little bit. But then came back into it.”
Clearly, the ex-United talisman was impressed with his former side’s talented wingers, and hopefully for the Reds, it can be a sign of positive things to come as they look to put their goal-scoring woes behind them.
Rooney highlights Sesko role
United’s other new boy, Benjamin Sesko, was unlucky not to start, as he only had a few training sessions under his belt, but he was able to make a 25-minute substitute cameo where he showed glimpses of what he can do.
Speaking on the Slovenian forward, Rooney said, “And Sesko, when he came on, I think he did what we expect him to do.”

“He held the ball up, he put himself in the middle of the goal, and he was waiting to try and get chances, so I think there are a lot of positives,” he continued.
Fans of the Red Devils will now be eagerly anticipating their match away at Fulham next Sunday, as they will be desperate to see some more of what their new and exciting attacking trio is capable of.
