Following Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa, legendary United forward Wayne Rooney praised one star’s performance in a key game in the race for Champions League qualification.
After opting to start Benjamin Šeško over Amad in the previous two fixtures, Michael Carrick restored the Ivorian to the starting lineup as Manchester United took a significant step towards Champions League football qualification, beating Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford.
United struggled to get going in the first half, with both sides trying to gain a foothold in the Premier League clash, but it was the home side that came closest to breaking the deadlock, with Emi Martinez denying Amad with an excellent save, while Diogo Dalot also squandered a great chance to put the side in front going into halftime.
United emerged from the halftime break looking like a completely different side, and just eight minutes into the second half, their electric start paid off when Casemiro headed home from a Bruno Fernandes corner to give his side the lead.
Despite this, just under ten minutes later, Villa levelled the score thanks to a great finish by Ross Barkley, who left Senne Lammens with no chance of keeping a clean sheet. With the scores tied, it was Fernandes who stepped up to the occasion yet again, finding Matheus Cunha with an excellent pass, with the Brazilian giving the home side the lead once again.
Bryan Mbeumo, who struggled to make an impact in the fixture, was replaced by Šeško with 15 minutes left to play, and just five minutes later, the Serbian forward was on hand to put the game to bed with a deflected strike looping past Martinez.
Wayne Rooney praises Fernandes’ impact
Fernandes’ tally for assists this season now sits at 16 after the captain’s two assists today, making Manchester United history for the most assists by a United player in a season.
With eight games still to play, Fernandes will be feeling confident that he can beat the league’s assist record, currently jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne, who both notched 20 assists in a single season.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Wayne Rooney praised the 31-year-old’s performances for Manchester United this season, saying, “This was a very important victory for Manchester United.
“The first half was a bit flat from both teams, and maybe they cancelled each other out, but then, in the second half, United played with more energy. The main man for United again, Bruno Fernandes, was the difference.”

A big step towards Champions League qualification
Manchester United’s victory over Aston Villa means that a three-point gap has opened up between United in third and Villa in fourth, with United now firmly cementing themselves as the leading club to achieve Champions League qualification at the end of this season.
While there will be plenty of speculation thrown around about whether United could have potentially been much closer in the title race if Ruben Amorim was dismissed earlier in the season, playing elite European football next season will still be a special achievement considering United’s start to the season.
As fixture congestion takes its toll on the sides competing for Champions League football around Manchester United, Michael Carrick will be feeling confident that his side can qualify.
Depending on the performances of the English sides in Europe, a fifth-place finish could be enough to play in the Champions League next season, but with United having the more favourable remaining fixtures compared to the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, they find themselves in the driving seat for a third-place finish and automatic qualification.
