Wayne Rooney has named the only two players he feels Rúben Amorim must look to keep at Manchester United ahead of what will be a busy summer transfer window.

A major shake-up is expected at Manchester United this summer as Rúben Amorim reshapes the squad he has inherited from Erik ten Hag.

Several departures are already confirmed, with Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton set to leave when their contracts expire in June.

The club is also looking to offload Casemiro to reduce their wage bill, while Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are not part of Amorim’s plans and could be sold.

Speculation also surrounds the futures of Academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, whose potential sales would be considered “pure profit” in the club’s financial accounts, helping to ease financial constraints.

No way back for this United team

Wayne Rooney, United’s all-time top goalscorer, has shown himself to be a man who is not afraid to speak his mind and recently came down with a damning indictment of the current United squad.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney was asked if there is any way back for this United squad, to which he replied: “No, I don’t think so. They look lost. They look scared.

“Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who keeps producing, he annoys you at times but keeps producing. They need massive changes to the squad, I think 10-15 players need to leave the club.

“Obviously, they can’t do that, but there is a mentality there where no one is taking responsibility [in the squad].”

Only two United players must stay

While there is a general consensus that the squad at United is not good enough, there is still a lot to be said about the individual quality of many players at United.

Those such as Leny Yoro, Mainoo, Fernandes, and Amad have shown themselves to be fantastic footballers within an underperforming squad, and Rooney reckons two of these players must be kept at the club this summer.

“I’d keep Bruno and Mainoo,” Rooney added. “There is a culture at the club where it’s too easy to lose games and the players come out and say, ‘Onto the next one,’ and all that rubbish.

“Just show some character and fight on the pitch. It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well, I’ve got my kids in the academy, and it hurts watching them.”
