Wayne Rooney waxes lyrical over Bruno Fernandes after “impressive” star joins exclusive Manchester United club
Wayne Rooney has been singing the praises of Bruno Fernandes as the Manchester United midfielder joined an exclusive club with a fantastic performance against Leicester City.
Manchester United secured a commanding 3-0 win over Leicester City, with goals from Rasmus Højlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Bruno Fernandes lifting Rúben Amorim’s side to 13th in the Premier League.
Højlund opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, finishing a precise pass from Fernandes. Leicester pressed for an equaliser before the break, but Wilfred Ndidi and Patson Daka couldn’t take their chances.
Early in the second half, Ayden Heaven was stretchered off and replaced by Toby Collyer. Garnacho had a goal disallowed for offside but made amends soon after with a brilliant turn and finish to double United’s lead.
Fernandes rounded off the victory in the closing stages with a superb strike, sealing a confident performance from United as they head into the March international break.
Fernandes was brilliant once again
Fernandes had a very slow start to life this season at United, only scoring his first goal of the campaign once it hit November and after Erik ten Hag had been sacked.
He continued to sit in a rut of wavering form, but once the new year turned, the Portuguese magnifico has been relentless and has been involved in seven goals across United’s last three fixtures.
After a hat-trick against Real Sociedad in midweek, Fernandes notched two assists and a goal against Leicester, rounding off what was yet another heroic display in Red.
His two assists at the King Power Stadium now see the player sit with 50 goals and 50 assists for the Red Devils in the Premier League, making him only the sixth player in the club’s history to do so as he joins an exclusive club.
While United have not seen the successes of the past since Fernandes joined, with the club winning just two trophies in his five years at Old Trafford, many are starting to place the 30-year-old among the club’s legendary players.
Rooney full of praise for Fernandes
In reaction to the result and Fernandes’ two assists, United legend Wayne Rooney waxed lyrical about the club captain, stating it’s “impressive” that the player has managed to register 50 Premier League assists for United despite poor performances from the team over the last few years.
“Bruno, I think, again, two assists today, yet another goal,” Rooney explained on Match of the Day.
“He’s the heart of everything Manchester United do. Obviously, it’s well documented the team have not been in the best form over the last few years, but Bruno is the one who’s consistent with his performances, his goals, his assists.
“So, I think that’s really impressive to get to 50.”
