This defeat marked United’s 14th in the Premier League this season, establishing a new club record. Additionally, their total of 19 losses across all competitions represents their highest in a single campaign since 1977-78.
United had several key players, such as Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Raphaël Varane, out for the game, and Wayne Rooney believes that some of those players are making more of their injuries than they should.
Rooney calls out players
While Ten Hag has been claiming that injuries have hampered their season, Rooney believes that some of the players who are claiming injury are doing so just so they can skip fixtures and instead prepare themselves for the upcoming FA Cup final and 2024 European Championships, effectively saying that some of them are lying.
“I think the performances, there’s some very good players in that squad, and the performances are way below par,” Rooney said on Sky Sports. “As we look at the injuries they’ve got, they’ve picked up, some of them players can play. Some of them players can play. 100 per cent.
“You’ve got the European Championships coming up, you’ve got the FA Cup Final coming up. It’s easy for players to stay out for a little bit and then come back towards the final and get themselves ready for the European Championships, and you’ve seen it.
“I’ve seen it myself over the years, so I just think the players who are being injured, they’re not filling themselves with any credit at the minute, and the manager is just going to take all the stick for that.”
