Wayne Rooney was highly complimentary of Harry Kane, who surpassed Ronney’s 53 goals for England to become the country’s leading goalscorer.

Rooney, 37, played for The Reds over a 13-year period, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals, a title he also held at the international level for England.

He played for England at various youth levels before exploding onto the international scene when he earned his first England cap; he became the country’s youngest player and also became the youngest player to score for England, a tally he went on to exceed to monumental levels.

Harry Kane eclipsed Wayne Rooney’s prestigious hold over the record on Thursday evening against Italy.

Tottenham Hotspur’s striker, who also became his club’s leading goalscorer this year, showed his clinical edge in Naples as he dispatched a penalty to take his tally to a record-breaking 54.

Rooney quickly applauded the 29-year-old when his benchmark was broken, tweeting a modest post on Twitter.

Wayne Rooney’s humble but jokey reaction to his record being broken speaks volumes about both Rooney’s maturity as well as his admiration for Harry Kane’s ability. It is a brilliant response from one of the greatest players to play the game.

Kane’s goal proved pivotal in the encounter, as England defeated the Italians 2-1 to kick off their Euro 2024 qualifying group.

At the club level, Kane is among the best in European football, and his 21 goals in the Premier League this season is only bettered by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland’s 28.

His contract at Tottenham runs out in 2024, and he has been rumoured to be making a potential switch to United in the summer.

Any potential move would prove costly for The Reds but could well be valuable as the English captain edges closer to Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals.
