Wayne Rooney gives reality check to Manchester United star, ‘disappointed’ with his displays

Wayne Rooney has claimed that he has been ‘disappointed’ by the performances of one Manchester United star this season.

Manchester United have had a difficult season so far, with performances and results being inconsistent across the campaign.

Ruben Amorim was sacked as head coach earlier this month after a fall-out with Jason Wilcox. The club decided to appoint Michael Carrick as a caretaker head coach.

Carrick, who will be in charge until the end of the season, started work at Carrington this week ahead of a difficult clash with rivals Manchester City this weekend.

He will be hoping to improve the levels of several players at United who have not be performing well enough this season.

The arrival of Carrick seems to be good news for Kobbie Mainoo, who was almost frozen out of the team under Amorim.

Mainoo has also worked under Carrick’s new assistant, Steve Holland, at England. He was the coach who told him that he would join the England senior side ahead of Euro 2024.

While many are excited that Mainoo looks set for more chances under Carrick, Wayne Rooney has claimed that he has been ‘disappointed’ with the youngster’s displays when he has played this term.

“I think Kobbie will certainly get more of a chance [at] what he’s had and then it’s on Kobbie,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“And I’ll be honest, I’ve been disappointed with him when he has had his opportunity.”

“I know he hasn’t played many games, so he needs to obviously try and get his fitness levels back up to scratch as well, but I’m pretty certain he’ll get an opportunity to come back into the team,” he continued.

Mainoo has the ability to step up

Every United fan knows the levels which Mainoo can reach and he has not been given enough game-time so far this season.

But on the other hand, you would also like him to grab the opportunities with both hands and that is hopefully what he will do under Carrick.

It is definitely harder for a midfielder to make a strong impression in a limited amount of minutes, but Mainoo should be looking to run games more when he is on the pitch.

He has the ability to do so. We have seen it before, and hopefully he will be able to show it in the second half of this season.
