Wayne Rooney has disagreed with his former teammate’s claim regarding an ‘outstanding candidate’ for the Manchester United managerial position.
Manchester United have been on the lookout for a new manager since sacking Ruben Amorim after only 14 months in charge.
The Reds turned to their interim manager, Darren Fletcher, for their recent Premier League and FA Cup bouts, although having won neither of the two fixtures, the Scotsman has since been replaced.
Fletcher’s role has been taken over by his former teammate, Michael Carrick, who will step in as a caretaker manager until the end of the season, where the Reds will then decide on a permanent appointment.
With a host of managers being debated about for the role, Wayne Rooney has disagreed with Gary Neville regarding an ‘outstanding candidate’.
Neville fancies Ancelotti
When speaking on The Overlap, via Football365, Neville picked Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti as his top option for the vacant managerial position at Old Trafford.
Neville said, With these last 12 years being a period of massive underperformance for Manchester United managers, there are certain boxes the next candidate now needs to tick.
“You have got to be pretty special to tick all four of those boxes and, as such, the outstanding candidate for me would be Carlo Ancelotti, even if it would mean potentially delaying his arrival until late July if Brazil reached the World Cup final.
“No one comes as close to fulfilling everything laid out above than he does. Ironically, the club met with Carlo shortly before his [Sir Alex Ferguson’s] retirement in 2013, and we could have short-circuited this entire process, starting with him at the beginning of the cycle.
“But, by that stage, he was close to agreeing to joining Real Madrid for his first spell in charge, and so what might have been a perfect appointment never happened.”
Rooney chooses Tuchel
Rooney has, however, disagreed with his former teammate and reckons that England boss Thomas Tuchel would be the best man for the job.
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney said, “Long-term you hope Thomas Tuchel goes and wins the World Cup with England.
“He’d be one you’d certainly try and bring in. He’d be the one you’d look at.

“Whoever goes in now, it is an opportunity. Last time Ole went in as interim and got the job permanently. Whoever goes in now has an opportunity to go and show what they are worth.
“If not, Thomas Tuchel is the outstanding candidate.”
Clearly, the two former Reds have different ideas when it comes to deciding on a successor to Amorim; however, they both clearly want a manager with an extensive resume who can handle the pressure that Old Trafford brings.
