Frenkie de Jong was subject to a three-month-long saga at Manchester United as Erik ten Hag looked to bolster his midfield last summer.

Unfortunately for Manchester United, Frenkie de Jong‘s move to Erik ten Hag‘s squad never materialised, with the player choosing to stay at Barcelona, despite United and the Catalan outfit agreeing on a rough fee of €85 million.

Manchester United recently played Barcelona, in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Camp Nou – in which De Jong started against the side who wanted him so desperately last summer.

The fixture was subject to much debate as to who came out on top, with Marcus Rashford scoring one and creating another after Marcos Alonso gave the hosts a lead in the second half.

Raphinha’s cross-turned-goal with 15 minutes to play settled the score in a draw, with the two sides taking part in the second leg of the Europa League tie at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

As is customary when European opposition plays against United in Manchester, the visiting squad are allowed to conduct a training session in the ground – with Xavi’s squad experiencing the famous ground on Wednesday evening.

Although the photos of the opposing players in the ground are always of interest to United fans, there has been one club that has caused more conversation of any other: A video showing Frenkie de Jong marvelling at the ground while taking part in said training.

The video, courtesy of BeanymanSports, has sparked many fans to theorise what De Jong is thinking in the moment captured and the player’s more general feelings as kick-off approaches.

Although many United fans still want to see Frenkie de Jong sign for Erik ten Hag’s side next summer, there are some who feel that the time and opportunity of the transfer has passed.

Manchester United, after failing to secure the services of Frenkie de Jong last summer, moved on towards Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro, who signed for the club for a fee of around €60 million.

Casemiro has been a huge hit amongst the fans, and his presence is felt every game. Whenever he has not played due to injury or suspension, the gap in midfield is obvious; he will be a key player for Erik ten Hag if they are to progress through to the next round of the Europa League.
