Vitor Pereira confirms Wolves unique tactic vs Man Utd, it’s absolutely embarrassing for Ruben Amorim
Manchester United conceded directly from a corner for the second time in a week as they lost 2-0 against Wolves on Thursday evening.
Ruben Amorim’s side were defeated for the fourth time in their last five Premier League games as they visited Wolves on Boxing Day.
The Reds were in control during the first half but failed to lay a glove on Vitor Pereira’s side, who were much more energetic and physical.
United’s night was made much more difficult when Bruno Fernandes was sent off early in the second half for committing a second yellow card offence.
The hosts eventually scored the opener, with Matheus Cunha scoring directly from a corner kick. It was the second time United had conceded this way in a week after Son Heung-min did the same last Thursday.
Deep into stoppage time, Wolves grabbed a second after Alejandro Garnacho lost possession on the left wing. Cunha led the counter-attack and set up Hee-Chan Hwang for an easy goal.
Wolves were trying to score directly from corners
It was an extremely difficult game for Amorim’s side and made worse by ridiculous errors.
While Fernandes’ red card was very poor, it is hard to look past a player scoring directly from a corner against you for the second time in a week. Both André Onana and Altay Bayındır have suffered the same fate.
What makes it even worse is that Cunha was purposively shooting from the corner and had been practicing it in training ahead of the game.
Wolves boss Pereira confirmed this after the game. “Of course we analyse every match and try to understand the spaces we can explore,” he said.
Cunha added in his post-match interview: “Yeah, I shoot. I trained to shoot [from the corner].”
United’s set-piece mess is embarrassing
This may take you back to 2016, when Louis van Gaal punished Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira for attempting to score directly from corners in an Under-21s game.
However, when that is happening against you at the highest level, you have to question yourself and ask why you’re allowing teams to have that mindset against you.
United have now conceded 10 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this season, with Wolves being the only team with a worse record.

Amorim knows that it is something that needs to be addressed but when conceding directly from corners, it shows that other teams are now targeting United in this area.
That makes it so much more difficult to solve, and the fact that it has got to a point where a player practices to score from a corner–and then actually does it–is absolutely embarrassing for the Reds.
Improvements are needed in so many aspects of the game, but right now, it feels like United will concede from corners or free-kicks every match and that is concerning.
