Virgil van Dijk explains how Liverpool “nullified” one Man United star in 3-0 defeat
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has explained how they “nullified” one Manchester United star in the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Manchester United fell to a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, delivering a lacklustre performance under Erik ten Hag.
The Reds were given an early scare when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR check, but Liverpool soon took the lead.
Casemiro lost possession, which led to a goal from Luis Diaz, and a similar error from the Brazilian contributed to Liverpool’s second goal just before halftime.
Even after Casemiro was substituted at the break, Ten Hag’s tactics remained questionable. Kobbie Mainoo being dispossessed resulted in the third and final goal.
United’s strike force was limited and rarely troubled the Liverpool backline. Joshua Zirkzee looked promising on his debut at the beginning of the season but struggled in this game.
The Dutchman was dropping deeper with the aim of trying to create space for his teammates in behind the Liverpool backline.
However, after the game, Dutch teammate Virgil van Dijk explained that he was prepared for this and that they “nullified” it quickly.
“Joshua Zirkzee plays now as a striker for them, but I know he likes to drop and receive the ball to his feet,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.
“We know they like to do this passing in behind but we nullified it quickly. Our game plan worked. We kept patient.
“It’s a proud moment. What pleased me the most was the performance from start to finish. We want to enjoy ourselves out there, and the only way to do that is through the hard work we put in.
“We dominated and should have scored more. Winning 3-0 is a big improvement from last year. We had to stay focused, and we did very well. I’m very proud of the boys.”
United return to Premier League action later this month after the international break, with an away game against Southampton.
