Verbal terms agreed, release clause triggered next – Man Utd dealt Bryan Mbeumo worry after £55m bid rejected

Manchester United have been dealt a fresh worry in the race to sign Bryan Mbeumo after Brentford rejected the club’s £55 million bid.

Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United rebuild has begun with purpose, as the club confirmed a £62.5 million deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves on the opening day of the summer window.

The momentum carried into the second day, with it being reported that Bryan Mbeumo is keen to join United, despite competition from Newcastle, Arsenal, and Tottenham.

United were handed another boost as captain Bruno Fernandes chose to stay at Old Trafford, turning down a lucrative offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal.

With two major targets in the pipeline and Fernandes committed, attention now shifts to player sales to help finance the next wave of signings.

United dealt fresh Mbeumo worry

Although Mbeumo had given United his priority last week, subsequent reports have revealed that Tottenham are attempting to hijack the club’s move for the Cameroon international after Brentford rejected an offer worth £55 million, including add-ons, from Old Trafford.

With Mbeumo initially informing Tottenham that he would rather join United this summer, they have since moved to appoint Brentford manager Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, which spells real danger for United.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Frank has now verbally agreed to personal terms with the North London club, with conversations ongoing regarding his backroom staff as well.

The deal is subject to Spurs paying the release clause in Frank’s current contract, which is expected to happen soon.

United must act fast to avoid losing Mbeumo

So far this summer window, United have acted quickly on their agreements, securing Cunha to a five-year contract before the window opened, convincing Fernandes to stay just days later, and gaining Mbeumo’s blessing to pursue his transfer.

Although the window temporarily closes on Tuesday, 10 June, due to the Club World Cup later this month, this will not stop talks from continuing. Amorim’s team must ensure they do not put the brakes on before it reopens on Monday, 16 June.

Mbeumo is known to be a childhood United fan, which gives the club an edge, but the lure of continuing to work under the manager who brought him to England and helped cultivate him into the player he is today is a considerable one.

Although United remain firm favourites for Mbeumo this summer, they must ensure they do not rest on their laurels by agreeing a fee with Brentford and securing the star winger, and then turning their focus to sales.
