Unai Emery provides honest update on Jadon Sancho permanent transfer, “He will need…”

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has provided an honest update on Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho and whether they will offer him a permanent transfer.

Jadon Sancho completed his third consecutive loan move away from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, joining Aston Villa for the 2025/26 campaign.

After previous loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, Sancho opted for another temporary switch despite receiving several permanent offers from clubs in Italy.

Before finalising the move to Villa Park, he consulted Marcus Rashford, who had worked under Unai Emery during a loan stint in the second half of last season.

A return to Old Trafford was never considered, as Ruben Amorim had already indicated that Sancho was not part of his long-term plans.

Despite a difficult start to life at Villa Park, Sancho has taken advantage of injuries and started six consecutive games for Emery’s side and there are now questions about a potential permanent transfer.

Emery provides honest update on Sancho permanent transfer

Villa do not have any obligation to sign Sancho once his loan spell ends and it remains to be seen whether they will be in the race to sign him.

Sancho’s contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer and he will be available as a free agent. When asked about the possibility of signing the winger permanently, Emery provided an honest answer.

“Not yet, but he is a fantastic player,” the Villa boss said last week, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “Hopefully he can help us by increasing his qualities in our structure like he is doing.

“He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here. If he plays his best football, we will want him. But also other teams could be involved in the interest for him.”

Sancho will likely have offers from clubs in Italy and Spain in the summer, but he opted to remain in the Premier League the last two years with Villa and Chelsea.

Sancho’s wages will open up space for United

Sancho’s permanent departure from United will come a couple years too late when he finally leaves in the summer but it will provide the club a boost.

The loanee continues to earn enormous wages at Old Trafford. He will not be the only high-earner leaving the club, with Casemiro also confirmed to be departing.

United fans couldn’t view those two players more differently if they tried. Casemiro is loved within the fanbase due to his work-rate and professionalism; the same cannot be said for Sancho.

But they both have one thing in common: high wages. United will have some room to make some significant summer signings with the space their departures opens up.
