Tyrell Malacia has broken his silence after reports claimed he had told Manchester United he wants to leave the club this summer.
Manchester United are planning a major squad revamp this summer following a disappointing campaign and the absence of European football next season.
Rúben Amorim’s transfer budget is expected to go towards the signing of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, with further spending dependent on outgoings.
A number of departures are on the cards, including loanees such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, though offloading them has proven challenging.
Malacia, 25, joined PSV Eindhoven on loan for the second half of last season but managed only six starts with the Eredivisie champions.
However, PSV confirmed they will not trigger their £9 million option to buy, meaning Malacia will return to United for pre-season as the club looks to find him a new move.
Malacia has told United he wants to leave
News broke on Friday afternoon that Malacia was one of five players who had informed United he would like to leave this summer, with Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho doing the same.
However, a report from The Athletic has since revealed that this communication from the club has not been received well.
It has been reported that some of the respective players and their representatives are unhappy with the notion that they had requested to leave the club, disputing the claim.
Malacia posted a cryptic message on Instagram just hours after the reports emerged, which read “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:11–13”.
Malacia’s sale may take time
As detailed in the media in recent weeks, United are finding it hard to drum up any interest in Malacia, with the player’s stock having dropped dramatically since his move to United in 2022.
Malacia is no doubt still a talented left-back. Still, it’s hard for any potential suitors to judge his abilities across the top-five leagues, as his injury and mediocre loan spell at PSV have done little to aid his cause.
Malacia reportedly earns around £75,000 a week at United. While this is by no means a major dent in the club’s wage books compared to the mega-contracts of Sancho and Rashford, it is still a hefty amount for a less financially able club to fork out.
The Dutchman may have to take a pay cut to join his next club, and it could be a deal that drags on until later in the window.
