There were two winners and three losers from Ruben Amorim’s first Manchester United game in charge against Ipswich Town on Sunday evening.

Manchester United settled for a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in Ruben Amorim’s debut as head coach, despite taking an early lead.

Amad Diallo dazzled with a brilliant solo run to assist Marcus Rashford for the opening goal. However, that was the highlight of United’s performance at Portman Road.

Ipswich equalised just before halftime with a deflected long-range effort that glanced off Noussair Mazraoui.

The second half saw United struggle to generate meaningful opportunities, as Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho failed to leave their mark in the attacking phase.

Amorim has not had long with his players but that game would have given him much more information on many of those in his squad.

Amad and André Onana were the clear winners from the game, with the pair being United’s two most outstanding players.

Despite playing as the wingback and being defensively switched on, Amad still made a lot happen in his minimal amount of touches in the final third, including his excellent assist.

Meanwhile, Onana essentially ensured United did not lose the game with several tremendous saves throughout the game. Amorim also praised his passing in the game.

On the other hand, several players stood out for the wrong reasons in this game. Jonny Evans has been one of United’s better performers since re-joining the club but looked troubled in the wide centre-back role.

He made several mistakes in possession and is not quick enough to react to some of the attacks from Ipswich.

Meanwhile, the midfield was an issue for Amorim in this first game, with neither Casemiro or Christian Eriksen able to influence the game significantly.

They did OK in their defensive shape but were mostly unable to aid United in possession and their lack of mobility made progression in central areas very difficult.

Amorim’s team at Sporting were dangerous because they had the wide threats from wingback but also could move through central areas. Neither of those two were able to do that against the Ipswich press and you’d be looking at someone like Kobbie Mainoo to make an impact there.
