Two reasons why Manchester United are ‘concerned’ with Jadon Sancho’s struggles at Aston Villa

Manchester United decided to loan Jadon Sancho out to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window but he has struggled so far this term.

Jadon Sancho left Manchester United on his third loan spell at the end of the summer transfer window, joining Aston Villa for the 2025/26 season.

After previous loan stints with Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, Sancho turned down permanent offers from several Italian clubs, choosing instead another short-term move.

Before agreeing to the switch to Villa Park, he spoke with Marcus Rashford, who had spent the second half of last season on loan under Unai Emery.

A return to Old Trafford was never on the cards, as it was evident that Sancho no longer featured in Ruben Amorim’s plans.

So far this season, Sancho has started one game and came off the bench twice. He has been an unused substitute in Villa’s last two games.

Why United are ‘concerned’ with Sancho’s struggles at Villa

Sancho’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the current season, which means he will likely depart the club for free at the end of the season.

When he moved to Villa, there were some rumours that United would consider activating the 12 month extension in his contract so they could try and sell him for a small price in January or in the summer.

But the Reds are said to be ‘concerned’ by Sancho’s poor start to life under Unai Emery because his form means it is unlikely that United could sell him in January or in the summer if the extended his deal.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey told United In Focus: “There is concern at United about Sancho’s situation.

“It’s not that they were hoping a return to form would signal a return to Old Trafford, far from it, but the chances of getting any money back for a player that cost over £70million are looking as slim as they ever have.

“In ideal world Sancho would have featured constantly and impressed and United would have a decision to make about whether to take up his option and possibly sell him, or even sell him in January.

“Sancho could clearly return to form and the hope within United is that he does so they might have a decision to make.

“They will continue to monitor the situation but hopes are not high.”

Sancho’s bizarre decision to stay in the Premier League

Sancho’s insistence to remain in the Premier League this season was obviously going to backfire for him. It is clear that he would excel in a slower league.

Antony looks like a different player at Real Betis in La Liga but most of his success is down to being away from the intensity of the Premier League.

That’s exactly what happened with Sancho when he moved back to Borussia Dortmund as well but for some reason he wanted to test himself once again in England.

United signed him for just over £70 million and it seems like their wish of securing £5-10 million for him is not even realistic now.
