Two Manchester United stars have won the international break without playing a single minute

Two Manchester United players have won the international break despite not playing a single minute for their respective nations.

Whilst most Manchester United players travelled to represent their countries during the international break, as always a handful remained behind.

Amongst these players were Joshua Zirkzee, not selected by Ronald Koeman, and Casemiro, who did not fly out to be with the Brazil squad. Thus, they have had the chance to holiday and recharge whilst also training in smaller groups at Carrington.

Whilst players do want to represent their countries, in the context of the club season this is a huge positive for two players who have been amongst United’s best in the recent upturn in form under Ruben Amorim.

Much-needed opportunity for rest

Casemiro is now in his 30s and it has been seen that physically, he is not quite at the same level he once was. He tires much faster and cannot cover ground in the same way he used to, and this is something Ruben Amorim has to think about in his team selections.

Zirkzee meanwhile, seems to have found his stride at United and has been excellent both in and out of possession in recent weeks. Given United’s low numbers in the attacking line, it is a good time for him to have found that stride too. But he has looked incredibly tired in recent games, too.

The physical demand on United’s players has been a lot, and the international break has seen many continue playing. But the opportunity for rest is key too, and by not linking up with their national teams these two players have had that opportunity to recharge ahead of an important upcoming period for United.

Both right now are needed starters for United in most games, and having them fresh and ready to give their best is one hidden advantage the international break has brought to United.

Important run of games coming up

The upcoming fixtures for United are difficult ones and also ones that carry great significance. United visit the City Ground next Tuesday to face high-flyers Nottingham Forest, before hosting Manchester City on the Sunday – who they will be hoping to do the double over.

The following Sunday sees United travel to a rowdy St James’ Park to face a Newcastle United side fired up after winning their first major trophy in 70 years, and this comes either side of Europa League quarter-final ties against Olympique Lyonnais that will make or break United’s season.

Following the second leg at home to Lyon, United will have just six games left of the Premier League season and potentially three more in the Europa League, should they qualify.

Having key players fit and ready, particularly for the Europa League, is key as Amorim’s side have an opportunity to somewhat salvage what has been a disastrous season, and the two-week rest will have been a very welcome one for Casemiro and Zirkzee.
