Harry Amass has been thriving out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, and two traits have been impressing the Wednesday faithful as the end of his loan in January approaches.
Manchester United had an eventful summer transfer window, bringing four new players into the first-team squad, with Senne Lammens completing a late deadline-day move.
The club also oversaw several significant departures, including Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Chelsea and Antony’s transfer to Real Betis, after both were judged to be outside Rúben Amorim’s long-term plans.
United were similarly active in the loan market, arranging temporary spells for a number of academy players to help them gain crucial first-team experience.
The summer also signalled a fresh chapter for Jonny Evans, who stepped into a new position as the club’s Head of Loans and Pathways following his retirement. Under his guidance, 14 academy prospects have headed out on loan for the current season.
Sheffield Wednesday impressed by two Harry Amass traits
Harry Amass has thrived since joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan at the start of the season, with the full-back having started all 12 Championship games this season.
His recent performance in the Steel City derby didn’t go unnoticed, and despite losing the game 3-0, Amass’s “quality” performance was praised by Wednesday fans.
As reported by The Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday were impressed by the United loanee as soon as he came in, stating: “They were struck by his confidence but also his humility. There was no sense of him thinking he was above anyone, despite being on United’s books and coming to a struggling side.”
Amass’ loan deal runs until January, with an extension until the end of the season built in, which has to be agreed on by both clubs. Wednesday are pushing to keep the 18-year-old for the rest of the season, and have communicated as such to Man Utd.
The report states that this is likely to happen, although a potential recall hasn’t been ruled out. Amass is reportedly happy to stay at Wednesday and continue to develop.
Sheffield Wednesday loan has paid off
Amass’s move to Sheffield almost didn’t happen in the summer owing to the financial crisis that the club found themselves in after Dejphon Chansiri’s failed tenure at the club.
Man Utd, however, were the club that ensured this deal went through. As Wednesday found themselves under a transfer embargo, Man Utd guaranteed that they would cover all costs of the deal, which allowed the deal to go through on deadline day.

With the signing of Diego León last January, it would be easy to see that he would be Amass’ replacement as the long-term left-back at United. However, a full season competing in the Championship would substantially improve both his physical ability, owing to the nature of the league, as well as his defensive ability, given that Sheffield Wednesday would most likely be on the back foot for most games.
Patrick Dorgu has struggled for minutes this season, being displaced by Dalot, who is a natural right-back. Amass could return to Old Trafford next summer with the confidence that he could displace Dorgu and become a regular starter for United.
