Troy Deeney has heaped praise on five of Manchester United’s star men following their Derby day victory on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.
Manchester United delivered an authoritative performance at Old Trafford, securing a 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City under Michael Carrick.
United started with intensity, pressing City high and carving out early chances. Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire both went close in the opening stages, with Maguire hitting the crossbar.
Amad and Bruno Fernandes had goals ruled out for offside before the interval as United controlled proceedings. After the restart, Casemiro was denied by a strong save from Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Mbeumo also kept out soon after.
Mbeumo eventually opened the scoring on 65 minutes with a calm finish. Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu then added a second ten minutes later, converting from a Matheus Cunha assist to seal the victory.
Deeney adds four United stars to Team of the Week
This season, it’s understandable that very few United players have made it into most Team of the Week selections, with consistent underperformance under Rúben Amorim leaving many hanging dry.
However, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney took a different approach following the stunning 2-0 win over City, adding four of United’s players to his BBC Sport Team of the Week for gameweek 22.
First off, he added Maguire to the defensive line for his “huge” performance against Erling Haaland, and also claimed that he was Amorim’s “best player” during his time at United. Then, he added Dorgu for his electric display, commenting on how “free” the Dane looked on the left wing.
In attack, Fernandes was another one added, with Deeney explaining that it was the club captain who was the “heart” of United’s good fixture, while Mbeumo was the lone forward in his team, stating that his “wonderful” finish and performance “carried” United over the line at Old Trafford.
Deeney full of praise for Carrick
In addition to the four United players in the team, Deeney also selected gaffer Carrick as the manager of the week.
“A tough week for him,” the Englishman started. “A lot of people, including Roy Keane and myself, were questioning whether he’s good enough and things of that nature – or whether he even deserves the role.
“He answered emphatically. A wonderful, wonderful result. I think you have to say that’s easily the manager’s performance of the week. Now, can he back it up against Arsenal next week?”
United’s game against Arsenal, away at the league leaders, will be an interesting one. Carrick’s men are on a high following their scintillating display on Satruday, while Arsenal drew 0-0 away from home with a poor game against Nottingham Forest.
The North London side are also due to face Inter Milan away from home on Tuesday evening, giving them less time to rest and recover for the tie against United.
