Toby Collyer reveals brilliant message Bruno Fernandes told him before Manchester United 2-1 Rangers
Toby Collyer impressed for Manchester United in their dramatic 2-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Manchester United secured three points despite conceding an 88th minute equaliser against Rangers, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the winner in stoppage time.
One of the standout performers for Ruben Amorim’s men was 21-year-old midfielder Toby Collyer, who was making his first appearance in European competition.
The central midfielder deserved to start the game after positive cameos off the bench against Arsenal, Southampton and Brighton and delivered an “impressive” performance.
He completed 48 passes on the night, showcasing a level-head in possession, barring one momentary lapse in concentration early on in the game.
More importantly, however, was his impact off the ball, with the young player pressing well and displaying a good positional sense in the middle of the park.
Collyer reveals brilliant Fernandes message
Collyer was stationed alongside Fernandes in the engine room until he was substituted mid-way through the second half and they worked well together.
Questioned about the captain after the game, the Academy graduate told reporters that he ‘couldn’t ask for anyone better’ to play alongside.
He also explained that, ahead of the game, Fernandes made sure to tell Collyer to treat his first taste of European football like any other game he would play.
“Before tonight, he just told me to play my game. Treat it like every [other] occasion, because he knows I’m good enough,” Collyer said on The United Stand.
“He helps me, like all the other players, and he’s a great person. I couldn’t ask for anyone better.”
Collyer will be important in second half of the season
Collyer is doing all of the right things to push his way into Amorim’s thinking for upcoming Premier League fixtures.
It has been detailed that Collyer is one of the best trainers at Carrington and he is making a positive impression on the pitch now too.
While there is not a wide range of passing, the 21-year-old can cover ground better than players like Casemiro or Christian Eriksen and also can keep things ticking with simple passes.
He is not the finished product but could definitely be useful to Amorim’s side going into the second half of this season.
