Three Manchester United shirt numbers Patrick Dorgu could wear after £34m update
Manchester United are attempting to sign Lecce star Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad.
For the last 18 months, Manchester United have needed to strengthen at left-back, with consistent injury problems for Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.
It was a major issue beforehand and has become even more important to address under Ruben Amorim, who places major importance on the wingbacks in his 3-4-3 system.
Patrick Dorgu appears to be the main option for United this month, and the Reds have already held talks with the Italian club over a potential deal.
Latest reports from The Athletic suggest that there is currently a gap in valuation of around £8.5 million between the two clubs, with Lecce wanting £34 million for their prized asset.
Dorgu is an attack-minded player who can operate on either flank, and his most likely position if he was to join United would be at left wingback.
With the 20-year-old currently looking most-likely to become Amorim’s first signing at the club, it begs the question which shirt number he would take at Old Trafford.
Below, UtdDistrict look at three of the most-likely options for the Danish starlet.
Three United shirt numbers Dorgu could wear
The most likely shirt number option for Dorgu is actually his current one at Lecce, with the defender wearing no.13 for the Serie A outfit.
No.13 is one of the only lower-end shirt numbers available at United, with the latest occupant of the shirt being Lee Grant, who departed the club in 2022.
Park Ji-sung is another player who has donned that number for the club, but it is traditionally a goalkeeper’s shirt, with the likes of Anders Lindegaard and Roy Carroll also having worn that number for the club.
If Dorgu was to eye another number at Old Trafford, the no.19 would likely be the next best option for him. It is the only other number available below 20.
Players such as Amad and Marcus Rashford have worn the no.19, and the latest player to don the shirt was legendary defender Raphaël Varane, who left in the summer.
Finally, there are numerous other numbers available for new players, with numbers between 26 and 34 all currently vacant.
Dorgu has only wore the no.13 during his professional career so far, meaning there is no prior affiliation with any other numbers, making the third most likely shirt the no.26, most recently worn by Dean Henderson.
