There have been some baffling moments from André Onana which show exactly why he lost Ruben Amorim’s trust at Manchester United.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping problems have been clear in recent seasons, and André Onana has struggled to hit top form since joining from Inter Milan in 2023.
Once considered among the finest ball-playing goalkeepers in Europe, the 29-year-old has been unable to replicate that standard at Old Trafford.
After the club’s deadline day signing of Senne Lammens, it was initially reported that Onana and Altay Bayındır would remain to fight for a starting spot under Ruben Amorim.
But it has now been confirmed that Onana will instead head to Turkey on loan with Trabzonspor, where he is also set to benefit from a pay rise.
Three baffling Onana moments show exactly why he lost Amorim’s trust
Onana’s performances on the pitch have not been good enough for some time, but Amorim seemed to be wanting to make things work.
But it was three baffling moments during pre-season which led to his departure.
Various reports have noted that Amorim was not pleased that Onana suffered a hamstring injury just two days into pre-season this summer.
The Athletic have now claimed that the United boss was ‘dissatisfied’ by the fact that Onana was expecting to remain as no.1 this season despite his horror displays last term.
It was also claimed that the Cameroon goalkeeper spoke about a new contract with improved terms after the club’s failure to qualify for European competition.
These are not just baffling moments, but they show that Onana cannot be accountable for his actions, and it is no wonder that he has departed.
Onana will not be missed
Amorim is not just trying to build improvements on the pitch but also the right environment off it, and that doesn’t come when one of your biggest underperformers is asking for a pay rise and expecting to remain in a comfortable position.
Ideally, Amorim probably would have preferred to sell Bayındır and then had Onana and Lammens competing for the no.1 spot, but it simply doesn’t make sense if the Cameroon international isn’t ready for the challenge.
Onana seemed to have a great mentality when he was in front of the cameras before and after games, but that can only take you so far.
He will be hoping to start rebuilding his career in Turkey, but there won’t be many United fans who are sad to see him leave.
