Three Andre Onana replacements as Manchester United consider goalkeeper signing after shock injury

André Onana has suffered a shock pre-season injury and that means Manchester United are looking are considering the signing of a goalkeeper this summer.

Manchester United are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, as Ruben Amorim continues his squad overhaul going into his first full season as United manager.

André Onana’s future remains uncertain despite Amorim and Onana sharing a good working relationship, as exclusively revealed by UtdDistrict. While the 29-year-old has displayed glimpses of the form that earned him the move from Inter to Old Trafford, inconsistency has plagued his performances, which has fuelled rumours that his future lies elsewhere.

After securing the signing of Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million, and the imminent signing of Bryan Mbeumo for a similar fee, Amorim can now shift his focus to selling players that he deems surplus to requirements at United.

With the news that Onana has suffered a hamstring injury which will see him miss all of pre-season, and potentially the start of the Premier League season, United need to sign a new ‘keeper, with current backup Altay Bayindir expected to leave this summer.

#1 – Botafogo’s John Victor

John Victor is one of the latest names to be added to the list of potential Onana replacements. After a string of great performances at the Club World Cup, being named ‘Superior Player of the Match’ in his side’s 1-0 defeat in the round of 16, as well as keeping a clean sheet against PSG, the 29-year-old’s stocks have certainly risen.

Victor helped his side win the Serie A and the Copa Libertadores last year, being names in the Team of the Year for both of the competitions.

According to Goal Brazil, United have informed the Brazilian side that United are willing to trigger the £6 million release clause for the 29-year-old, with the report also claiming that Botafogo have resigned themselves to losing their shot stopper, as they are already identifying replacements.

#2 – Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez

Emiliano Martinez has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United since the beginning of the transfer window. Aston Villa missed out on Champions League football, so the club need to sell a number of players to adhere to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and Martinez has been linked with a move away from the West Midlands.

United could be handed a boost to their pursuit for the World Cup-winning goalkeeper, as Villa are close to signing a new goalkeeper owing to the uncertainty surrounding the 32-year-old’s future at the club.

Martinez has been open to a move to Manchester United, even ‘offering himself to Manchester United’ as he seeks a move away this summer.

A £40 million fee has been reported to get this deal over the line, which, although is a good fee for a player that has been described as ‘world-class’, could be out of United’s price range.

#3 Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen

Marc-André ter Stegen’s persistent injuries have caused him to fall out of favour at Barcelona, with Wojciech Szczęsny coming out of retirement and taking over as their main goalkeeper.

The Catalan side’s recent acquisition of the highly rated 24-year-old, Joan Garcia means that game time could be something that will be hard to come by for the German as he drops down the pecking order at the club.

Once described as “brilliant” by Planet Football, the 33-year-old shot stopper could provide some much needed stability and reliability between the sticks.

Ter Stegen is simply too good to be third-choice goalkeeper, and remains one of the best keepers in Europe, and while it could prove to be difficult to sanction a permanent move away from Barcelona, a loan deal could prove to be the best option for both Barcelona as Manchester United.
