Thomas Frank has made his feelings clear on Cristian Romero’s red card during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United claimed a 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League meeting at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
United began the contest on the front foot, with Bryan Mbeumo seeing an early opening, although Tottenham soon settled and enjoyed a spell of control. Michael Carrick’s side remained disciplined at the back, gradually regaining momentum before the game swung decisively in their favour.
Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, leaving Spurs down to ten men. United quickly made their advantage count, as a superbly worked corner routine allowed Mbeumo to fire a precise finish into the bottom corner and put the hosts ahead before half-time.
The second half followed a familiar pattern, with United dominating possession while Tottenham sat deep in defence. Two goals were ruled out for offside before Bruno Fernandes finally extended the lead.
The United captain timed his run perfectly to meet a powerful cross from Diogo Dalot, guiding his finish into the bottom corner to seal a comfortable three points for the hosts.
Frank reveals what he noticed after watching Romero red card
It was no shock to see Romero sent off for his challenge in the first half. In fact, the only surprise was that Casemiro was able to continue afterwards.
Thomas Frank has assured the media that his club captain did not have any malice in the challenge and that he apologised to the Spurs squad afterwards.
“Cristian, first and foremost, there is no intention to do the follow through and get a red,” the Spurs boss told TNT Sports.
“He clearly goes for the ball. Unfortunately, the way the rules are, it becomes a red. Cristian apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room.”
Speaking further to journalists after the game, Frank explained how it was clear that Romero was trying to go for the ball after he rewatched the incident but admits that it was a deserved sending off.
“The red card is a red card. I’ve watched it back now five times and Cuti clearly tried to go for the ball and unfortunately it just moved before, and red card,” he added.
United did well against 10 men
United played the game perfectly after the sending off. Being a man-up does not guarantee a result and the Reds knew that after losing to Everton earlier in the season.
Carrick’s side provided a moment of quality to score the opener and then did not stop dominating. Spurs only really had chances on the break and the attacking quality eventually led to another goal.

There was no chance that the United boss would allow his team to sit back and try and keep it at 1-0, and his tactics were rewarded in the end.
For United, it was good to get another win and move closer to those above them in the Premier League table.
