“They need…” – Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer completely agree on three Manchester United problems

With the new season fast approaching, Gary Lineker has given Manchester United a clear five-word message, telling the Reds what they need to do in order to succeed.

Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States is now well underway, having just been held to a 2-2 draw with Everton in the Premier League Summer Series.

Despite the result, this game saw many positives for Ruben Amorim’s side, and it also included the long-awaited debut of Bryan Mbeumo in United colours.

With only four weeks left in the transfer window, it is clear that the Red Devils still want to bring in some more new faces to add to Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo, including a striker as a top priority.

As well as a striker, United seem keen to enter the market again for a new goalkeeper and potentially a new midfielder as they look to improve their squad depth all over the pitch.

Lineker and Shearer’s verdict on United

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer gave their opinions on United’s summer activity, and it is clear that they feel the Reds need at least three more signings in order to succeed.

Shearer said: “Two good signings…they need at least another three, I would say. They need a top-class centre-forward and goalkeeper.”

Lineker then added to this by giving United’s recruitment team a clear message: “They need a lot more. A lot more.”

United appear to agree with this assessment from the two former English forwards, and are targeting a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who demands a fee of around £70million.

Are Lineker and Shearer right?

It goes without saying that two of United’s key issues last season were their squad depth as well as their ruthlessness in front of goal.

United’s new boys combined for 35 goals in the league last season, which is only nine shy of the Red Devils’ team total. Also, this pre-season has seen many of Amorim’s men return from injury.

So far in their pre-season, the Reds have scored eight across four matches, all against Premier League opposition. Although it is only pre-season, it feels like adding a quality striker will further eradicate any past goalscoring concerns.

Despite winning three and drawing one, United still seem eager to bring in more new faces, with Amorim himself calling for more legs in the midfield.

These next four weeks will certainly prove interesting to see what business the Reds end up achieving as they aim to heavily improve on last season’s 15th-placed finish.
