“They can spend…” Manchester United handed summer budget verdict in big Ruben Amorim boost
Manchester United are preparing for major squad changes under Ruben Amorim when the summer transfer window opens.
Ruben Amorim has had a tough start to life at Manchester United, securing just 10 wins in his first 22 matches in charge.
It’s clear that reinforcements are needed, but the club will have to operate within financial constraints in the upcoming window.
They were unable to spend much during the January window, with Patrick Dorgu being the only significant signing, coming in for £25 million.
It has been reported that player sales and departures will be crucial if the club want to support Amorim with quality new players.
Football finance expert hands United summer budget boost
Rio Ferdinand welcomed Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire onto his podcast this week and asked him about United’s financial situation.
The ex-United defender also questioned Maguire on how much United would have to spend in the summer window.
Maguire explained that with the anticipated departures of Antony and Marcus Rashford, the club are going to be able to “spend significant funds” for Amorim.
However, he mentioned the importance of buying the right players, something that has been a problem at Old Trafford for so many years.
“I mean, if you’re getting these people off the wage bill first of all. So Marcus Rashford and Antony – you’re saving yourself half a million pounds a week in wages, so that’s that’s £25 million that’s gone into the kitty,” Maguire explained.
“It looks like Villa have got an option to buy Marcus Rashford for around about £40 million – I saw him play the last couple of weeks, that’s looking a bargain. Of course, he’s an academy player, so that’s pure profit.
“There’s no reason why Manchester United still can’t spend significant sums. Remember last year they sold Mason Greenwood, they sold Scott McTominay, they made one or two disposals in January as well.
“So I don’t think that it’s a case of how much they can spend – they can spend far more than £100 million. It’s a case of doing it right and getting the right players.”
Amorim must also use United youth
One of the other ways Amorim can look to improve his squad at Old Trafford is by integrating some of the talented youth players at Carrington.
We have recently seen Chido Obi make his first-team debut while Sekou Kone is closing in on an appearance after appearing on the bench against Spurs and Everton.
Amorim has explained the importance of bringing through youth players into the squad.
“We have to really focus on that, as a club, when we have, at this moment, a lot of injuries. We should use the young players. If not, you don’t have the space for them to improve and show themselves,” he said last week.
“I think we really need to focus in the future of our club on the youth, because of the history and because of the reality of our club.”
These players can also fill roles within the squad so that United can focus on some of the more pressing issues in the transfer market.
