Vitor Pereira gave an update on three potential players that could miss the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United tomorrow
The 2024/25 Premier League campaign is coming towards a close, and with just six games to go, this season will be one to forget for Manchester United.
Following on from Thursday’s epic win over Lyon in the Europa League quarter final, United will look to carry on that momentum into tomorrow’s game against Wolves.
In what was Ruben Amorim’s tenth game in charge at United in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, United left the Molineux stadium with a 2-0 loss and a red card for captain, Bruno Fernandes.
The Reds aren’t the only team coming into this game on a high though. Wolves are looking for a fifth consecutive top flight win for the first time since 1970, and if they come away from Old Trafford with three points, it’ll be their first league double over United since 1979/80.
Three Wolves players could miss United clash
In the 2-0 loss earlier this season, much was made about Matheus Cunha who was, and still is linked with a move to United. The Brazilian grabbed a goal, but the second scorer was Hwang Hee-Chan.
The Korean joins Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Matt Doherty in being potential doubts for the trip to Manchester this weekend.
Speaking to the press ahead of the game, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira said: “Bellegarde, Doherty and Hee Chan [Hwang], they are trying to come back.
“They don’t have serious injuries, but they are trying to come back to help us in the game, and we’ll see. We have one more training tomorrow [Saturday] and I must decide and make those decisions tomorrow.
Should United focus on Europa League glory?
While this Premier League campaign won’t be looked on too fondly, Amorim’s men still have a chance of winning some silverware. They find themselves in the semi-finals of the Europa League where they will face Athletic Bilbao
After 120 minutes on Thursday, it’s expected that there will be a number of changes and potential debuts in the squad to face Wolves.
With no chance of getting automatic qualification into European competition and two points from their last six games will mean no chance of relegation, the question has come about as to whether Amorim should sacrifice these last games in order to have as good a chance as possible to win the Europa League.
After the game on Thursday, Amorim himself suggested that it’s worth sacrificing the league to focus on the competition, opting to play academy graduates in the league, both to rest the first-team regulars and to perhaps find another diamond in the rough going into next season.
With the appeal of Champions League being such a strong pull for potential signings, and with a much needed squad overhaul, it’s imperative that there’s elite European competition being played at Old Trafford next season.
