Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has waxed lyrical about one of the best performing players under Michael Carrick.
Manchester United are enjoying a positive spell under Michael Carrick after claiming four consecutive victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
That run of results has moved the Reds firmly into contention for a top-four place, boosted by the advantage of a lighter schedule without European commitments.
The impact of the managerial change is becoming clear. Previously, there were ongoing doubts about whether the squad was suited to Ruben Amorim’s tactical approach.
Now, United appear more settled and unified, with Carrick extracting strong performances from several of the team’s key players.
Foster waxes lyrical about one United star
Kobbie Mainoo had not started a single Premier League game for United before Carrick’s arrival but he has played a crucial role in all four of the wins since then.
The young midfielder registered an assist in the latest win over Spurs and his all-round performance earned praise from many fans and pundits, including Ben Foster.
“Brilliant, mate [Mainoo’s performance],” he said on the Fozcast podcast. “What a player. Honestly.”
Mainoo’s influence at Euro 2024 was also brought up on that episode, with Foster adding: “Exactly. Yeah, he was incredible [in the Euro 2024 final] as well, yeah.”
Foster suggests fallout between Amorim and Mainoo
Mainoo’s recent displays have also had everyone thinking the same thing; what on earth was Ruben Amorim thinking?
The Portuguese boss rarely started the academy talent and Mainoo probably would have left the club in January if he remained in charge.
Foster believes that there must have been a fallout behind the scenes between the two as he cannot understand why else Amorim would leave him out.

“There’s something [going] on there,” he added.
“There’s got to have been a massive fallout because there’s no way you can watch that player on Saturday do what he did and him not have been in the team because he is, you can tell he’s a player.
“He’s brilliant, he’s an absolute player.”
