Paul Scholes raised concern that Manchester United may make the wrong decision in the summer by selling one of their most promising talents.
With a busy summer in the works for Ruben Amorim’s reds, it looks like there could be a lot of chopping and changing to try and take Manchester United back to the top.
One area that is due for a massive overhaul is the United forward line. This season has seen a lot of miserable attacking play for Amorim’s side, with what is set to be a record low Premier League goal tally.
With lots of new signings on the horizon, it’s become a concern that United will need to make a few sales to comply with the Profit and Sustainability laws, which could see some unpopular departures.
Some of these departures could include loan stars Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, who will most likely fetch a pretty penny for United, however, there are some regular first-teamers who could be set for a shock exit.
Garnacho sale could be a mistake, says Scholes
With a number of European clubs being rumoured to have an interest in Alejandro Garnacho, the sale of the youngster could be a plausable possibility.
Paul Scholes expressed his concern over this on TNT Sports last night ahead of United’s Europa League semi-final win.
Scholes told his peers: “I fear with him that we will end up selling him for £50m-£60m for PSR reasons, possibly this summer – it has been rumoured, hasn’t it?
“I fear he might go somewhere else, he might play in a 4-3-3, and he will end up scoring 25 or 30 goals for somebody. That is how good I think this lad could be.
“Shoehorn him into this system, and I think it might be an issue because I am not sure he can play wing-back. I am not sure he is clever enough to be in that No.10 role, I am struggling to find a position for him in this system.”
Would this be a smart sale for United?
With Scholes admitting that it may be difficult to find a place for Garnacho in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, a sale may be likely despite the youngster’s talents.
The 20-year-old saw a bid of £45m in January from Napoli rejected, while it was also reported that Chelsea laid the groundwork for a summer deal after talking to his representatives.
The Argentine has had an undeniably poor season, with his decision making being questioned at times amid concerns over whether he is suitable to Amorim’s system.
Despite a poor season, Garnacho’s raw potential could see him thrive in the future, which Scholes hopes he is able to do whilst still in the red strip of United.
