The World Cup rule that could help Manchester United in the Premier League

The 2022 World Cup saw Argentina lift the trophy after a thrilling final against France, and the Qatar-based tournament saw increased amounts of added-time throughout.

As we often see in important fixtures, there was some attempted time-wasting throughout different matches in order to run down the clock.

However, the referees were tasked with giving a much fairer amount of additional time at the half-time break and also ahead of the full-time whistle. We often saw halves of football with eight or more minutes of added-time.

This created a much more appealing spectacle, with many goals being scored in these moments of games – moments that would previously have been lost due to the “dark arts” of the game.

United’s last game before the break saw Alejandro Garnacho score in the 92nd minute of the game to secure three points against Fulham. There was only one more additional minute to play.

When you now consider that each team in the Premier League is able to bring on five different substitutes in each game, further disrupting the flow, it seems clear that the approach from the World Cup should be brought into the English league.

For Manchester United, who often struggle against teams who attempt to disrupt games in this way, stamping down on giving appropriate additional time would be a positive for Erik ten Hag’s side.
