“That’s the key…” – Ben Foster praises Senne Lammens for brilliant start that has helped the whole team

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has shared his thoughts on Senne Lammens and has praised his effect on the team.

Ben Foster played 23 games for Manchester United at senior level and went on to gain experience throughout the English football pyramid playing for teams such as Watford, West Brom and Wrexham.

The retired keeper shared his thoughts on the current United team and picked out Senne Lammens as a standout player whose performances have positively impacted the entire squad.

Lammens has been key to United since he joined on Transfer Deadline Day. He didn’t make his debut until the Sunderland fixture before the first international break, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Rúben Amorim’s United currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League following the embarrassing defeat to Everton at Old Trafford. The Red Devils play Crystal Palace on Sunday at Selhurst Park and will be looking to bounce back from Monday night’s disappointing defeat.

Fans and pundits have been critical of Amorim’s tactical setup throughout the season, and these reports have been shared frequently following the loss to 10-man Everton. Despite this, Foster was able to share some much-needed positive words on Lammens.

Lammens “inspiring confidence” into United squad

The Belgian-led United to a five-game unbeaten streak with top performances throughout. His consistency appears to have made a huge impact on the United squad.

Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Foster revealed the impact Lammens has already had, saying: “I think that’s the key part, really, is how he’s settled and adapted so quickly. His positivity, his front-footedness, making big saves at big moments. But his all-round game, really, I think he just looks so composed, and I really want to get into his head and ask how he manages to put those performances and be so calm.”

Lammens’ ability to stay focused and composed has allowed for consistency in his impressive performances for United. When asked about his composure, Foster said: “Yeah, without doubt. I think not only him inspiring that confidence, but then the team, the spine of the team, being nice and settled as well.”

This ability has had an impact on the whole United team, who can be seen as far more calm with him in the squad, especially the back three.

Foster continued to say: “Once you get a settled spine of the team, then you can really work from there, and you can let the mavericks go and do their special bit of skill. Not having too many injuries as well is a big part of it.”

Lammens key to United’s change in form

Before Lammens’ arrival, United had to decide between Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir in goal, who both were seen as unreliable and inconsistent options for United. Foster discussed the importance of having a consistent starting keeper, saying: “When you’ve got that goalkeeper base nailed down nice and steady, nice and calm, relieve pressure at the big moments, that’s what you need.”

The Belgian international’s impact was seen from his United debut. Foster described the impact of the debut: “It’s that first game for Manchester United against Sunderland. It’s so important to get off to a good start and make a good impression in the first few minutes. The first action, coming and taking the high ball, but he did it.”

United reacted to this debut very positively, jokingly comparing the keeper to United legend Peter Schmeichel.

The Red Devils now look forward to a busy winter fixture list with important games against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth that will be key to reaching the European spots.

Foster hopes that the keeper’s form will continue this season and will push United upwards in the table:” It was the green tick on absolutely everything, and he’s carried on putting those green ticks in for the five games that he’s played as well. So long may it continue.”
