“That’s a sin…” Rio Ferdinand highlights the key reason for Manchester United’s loss to Aston Villa

Rio Ferdinand has highlighted one key reason as to why Manchester United lost their bout with Aston Villa at the weekend, labelling it a ‘sin’.

On Sunday afternoon, Manchester United made the trip down south to face an Aston Villa side that had won their previous nine matches across all competitions.

The Reds went a goal down late into the first half due to a magical strike by Morgan Rogers, before Matheus Cunha quickly capitalised on a Matty Cash error to level up proceedings.

It was the talented Englishman who scored yet another pearler for the Villains as they made it ten wins in a row, leaving Ruben Amorim’s side seventh in the Premier League in the process.

With United’s defending leaving a lot to be desired, Rio Ferdinand has highlighted the key reason as to why his former side fell to a disappointing defeat.

Ferdinand highlights Yoro

When asked on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel about the fixture, Ferdinand said, “There were two magical moments in the game that separated the teams.

“You have to say sometimes that when you’re playing against teams, and a player is in a groove, and he [Rogers] just stepped up at that time, and if you don’t commit, and don’t sort it out, you get punished.

“I look at the two goals, and they were identical almost, right, and I saw Gary Neville break down Leny Yoro in his comments, and I completely agree.

“The left-hand side and the right-hand side of the three need to be comfortable going wide, need to understand how you approach players, where you approach them, and timing.

“The fact that Leny let Morgan Rogers get out there, turn, then build up momentum running at him, that’s a sin in that position… He didn’t have to do much to get past him. He had the momentum, then he just shifts it and can shoot.”

Amorim’s exposing system

It seems as if every time United lose a game, one or more of their players are being picked apart due to an error during the game, but maybe this shouldn’t be the case.

Obviously, there are going to be players who aren’t of the required calibre to take the club back to where it needs to be, but Amorim’s system certainly isn’t helping.

The unique system that United have adopted appears to be exposing the flaws of its individuals, rather than focusing on their strengths. For example, Yoro having to defend the channels against one of the most in-form wingers in Europe, instead of a full-back.

Kobbie Mainoo is another of United’s stars who could argue he is being failed by Amorim’s system, as his technical ability is consistently ignored due to his supposed lack of athleticism.

It was rumoured that the Portuguese tactician may look to switch his side into a 4-3-3 in the near future, which may be better suited to the profiles in his squad.
