Rúben Amorim has his back against some of the criticisms regarding Manchester United’s signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Rúben Amorim made his demands to Manchester United’s board loud and clear this summer – he needs proven goalscorers, and he needs them in place before the 2025/26 season begins.
While the search for a new striker continues, the club have significantly bolstered their attacking ranks with the £127.5 million double signing of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha bagged 15 Premier League goals last season, while Mbeumo hit 20 – both comfortably outscoring every United player apart from Bruno Fernandes, who managed 19 across all competitions.
With the duo expected to feature together for the first time during United’s pre-season tour of the United States, fans are eager to see them form a partnership ahead of the opening clash against Arsenal on 17 August.
Amorim dispells United’s summer transfer myth
Cunha and Mbeumo’s transfers to Old Trafford have been two of the most high-profile moves this summer. Only Liverpool’s signings of Hugo Ekitike (£79 million package) and Florian Wirtz (£116 million package) have been more expensive.
After United finished 15th in the league last summer, many have pointed to the two United transfers and claimed that the only reason Amorim was able to secure the duo is because they were able to out-bid other clubs and offer premium contracts that other suitors could not match.
However, speaking to club media, Amorim branded these myths as a “lie”, explaining that both of United’s new forwards wanted to join because they believed in the project.
“Cunha and Bryan, they had different solutions [offers],” Amorim explained. “They had Champions League, and they wanted to come here.
“People say that they come here because of the money; that is a lie, and that I know for sure. So I’m really happy with that. So that is a key point. They want to come here.”
Cunha and Mbeumo are becoming team players
A major question surrounding both players is whether they would be able to adapt to becoming team players at a big club after being the main men at mid-to-lower table Premier League sides.
However, Amorim has clarified that the duo have immediately got to grips with their new role, both being very humble and acting as part of a team during their initial training sessions.

“The first thing, they are really humble, they know how to get inside one group, so they don’t feel like they are the stars,” Amorim clarified.
“They also understand that here is not the moment to want to be a star. They are team players at the same time, but it’s not just what they give to the team, it’s the way they make the team [feel]. So they are improving this team in every aspect.”
With around three weeks remaining until United kick off their 2025/26 campaign by welcoming Arsenal to Old Trafford, Amorim will use every second that he can to help his squad gel and improve from a disastrous last season.
