David Ornstein has confirmed Manchester United’s thinking surrounding Rúben Amorim’s future amid claims the club will conduct a “post-season review.”
Manchester United are preparing for their fourth final in just three seasons, as Rúben Amorim’s side take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on 21 May.
In recent years, United have featured in three domestic finals — lifting the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024 under Erik ten Hag, while falling short in the 2023 FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Despite making it to their second Europa League final in five years, this season has been marred by poor performances and unexpected defeats, with the club currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League.
Victory in Bilbao would not only secure a return to the Champions League but also strengthen Amorim’s position ahead of a pivotal summer transfer window.
United set for post-season review after poor campaign
Regardless of whether United win the Europa League this summer, a recent report has detailed that Amorim’s position at the club will be reviewed by United’s powerbrokers.
Omar Berrada and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will reportedly hold talks with Amorim about his future at United and assess the club’s vision going forward by focusing on two key areas.
Berrada, Ratcliffe, and Amorim will discuss the root causes of the problems he has faced so far at Old Trafford and whether the 40-year-old is still the right man to take United forward from next season and beyond.
“I’m really embarrassed that in 26 games [his league games in charge], we win six, and something is wrong in the way we play football,” Amorim recently admitted to Sky Sports. “And sometimes it’s not about how we play tactically and technically.
“It’s the way we face competition, the way we suffer, the way we get mad because we’re losing and the way we protect the goal. These things we need to improve, and sometimes it’s just inside the pitch, it’s outside the pitch.
“That feeling I’m talking about, fighting towards the end and facing competition, it’s not ok to lose, and it’s not ok to draw. It doesn’t matter if we can change our league position or not.”
Ornstein provides the latest on Amorim’s future
Amid Amorim’s poor domestic form, there have been some rumblings within United’s fan base concerning whether the head coach is the right man for the long term.
However, football and transfer expert David Ornstein has clarified that getting rid of Amorim is the “last thing” on the club’s agenda, and they will do whatever they can to avoid having to let the head coach leave this summer.
“Well, the way United’s domestic season has gone, and the position they’re in in the Premier League, and their level of expectations, it would be bizarre if a club didn’t review everything, and that will include the manager,” Ornstein commented on the Sky Sports Back Pages podcast.
“But I don’t think United would like to make another managerial change. It would be one of the last things on their agenda, and they’ll probably do whatever they can to avoid it.”
