Manchester United host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening as Erik ten Hag’s side look to return to Premier League action with three points.

On paper it is a kind opening league fixture following the World Cup. However, Steve Cooper’s team have won their last three games and have also had the opportunity to develop further as a team in the month-long break after integrating over 20 summer signings at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, United had many of their players in the knockouts of the Qatar-based tournament, and two of those – Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane – played in the final of the competition.

The latest team news for both sides heading into this fixture can be read below.

Manchester United

Both Varane and Martinez are very unlikely to be back in time for this encounter, as Ten Hag confirmed that neither are back at United’s Carrington training complex in his latest club interview.

Harry Maguire missed out on the 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Burnley last week, however, he has returned to the training pitch and could make the starting line-up after Casemiro played as a makeshift centre-back alongside Victor Lindelof against the Championship outfit in the cup.

Jadon Sancho is unlikely to be back for the fixture after Ten Hag confirmed he was training away from the squad due to being physically and mentally unfit to play.

Diogo Dalot was absent against The Clarets after falling to injury in his last game for Portugal at the World Cup. It seems unlikely that he returns to the line-up on Tuesday, but he could be able to make the bench.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be awarded his first Premier League start of the season after an impressive performance, which included his first assist of the campaign, against Burnley.

Nottingham Forest

The visiting side will be without their first-choice goalkeeper as Dean Henderson is ineligible to appear against his parent club.

The United loanee has been one of the standouts for the newly promoted side so far this season and will be a big miss for them. 35-year-old Wayne Hennessey is set to make his third appearance for The Garibaldi.

Former Red Jesse Lingard will be available, however. He scored in their Carabao Cup win against Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder left United in the summer after just over 20 years with the club.
