One Manchester United star has been told he has made the right decision to leave the club, and that Rúben Amorim’s current failures are not his fault.
Manchester United underwent a major clear-out of senior players across the 2025 summer transfer window, with Rúben Amorim deeming a host of his current squad members as not suited to his team.
Alejandro Garnacho was the first significant name to be sold as the 21-year-old sealed a £40 million move to Chelsea, while Antony was sold to Real Betis for £21.5 million plus a 50% sell-on agreement.
United also sanctioned a series of loan transfers, with Rasmus Højlund joining Napoli, Marcus Rashford signing for Barcelona, and Jadon Sancho heading to Aston Villa for the season.
Once the English transfer window had closed, André Onana also sealed a surprise loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor after Amorim demoted him behind Altay Bayındır in the goalkeeper pecking order.
Onana was right to leave United, says Geremi
Onana’s departure was viewed by many surrounding the club as an overall positive, as although he was a well-liked individual and a vocal presence in the dressing room, the Cameroon international was making too many mistakes and leaving the defensive line nervous.
However, former Real Madrid and Chelsea midfielder Geremi, who played over 100 times for Cameroon, has a different version of events. The 46-year-old believes that, as United are still failing to perform after Onana’s departure, this is proof that the goalkeeper was never at fault.
“I think he made the right decision [to leave the club],” Geremi said, as relayed by Le Bled Parle. “It’s a good thing for him because he needed to go somewhere where he could play a lot, without too much pressure.
“He needs the confidence that comes from playing regularly, and at his age, he needs to play.
“He was heavily criticised when Manchester United were struggling, but honestly, when you look at the team, he wasn’t the only player who wasn’t impressive. Even now, they’re struggling this season without him. I saw them play against Manchester City, and they were still mediocre.”
Onana leaving was still for the best
Despite Geremi’s words, Onana’s departure from United was still the best solution for all parties involved. Onana joined pre-season and was immediately injured, but wanted to speak about a new contract and a possible raise, which did not go down well with Amorim.
Instead, his loan move has seen Onana almost double his wage at United if he hits all his bonuses, as well as get him away from all the pressure and media attention that was surrounding him.
Onana is not a bad goalkeeper; his time at Inter Milan and Ajax has proven this. However, his tenure at Old Trafford reached a point where everyone was simply waiting for him to make a mistake. His one appearance this season against Grimsby was then littered with them.
The 29-year-old will return to United when his loan spell ends, but his time at the club is already over. Amorim will be hoping Onana can perform well and secure a good move next summer, with United hopefully receiving a good amount of cash for his transfer.
