Mason Mount’s superb performance against Wolves could help him secure his ticket to the 2026 World Cup as he receives a huge England recall boost.
Manchester United looked a far better side by the end of their 4-1 win against a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium, who are yet to register a Premier League win this season.
An early goal from Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring on a poor defensive Wolves display. But the home side equalised heading into the half time break thanks to a clean finish from standout player, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
The second half was a very one-sided story for Ruben Amorim’s players as goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and. Fernandes penalty secured all three points to take back to Old Trafford.
This puts United in 6th place on 25 points with Champions League football set in their sites. If the United players continue to perform to the standard of the second half display against Wolves, particularly Mount and Fernandes, then the race for top four could end in United’s favour.
Mount’s individual performance in United’s win has seen a surge in the conversation around his name in England’s World Cup squad.
Mount could be the answer to Tuchel’s No. 10 questions
Mount secured his third goal of the season against Wolves making a penetrating run through the defence as Fernandes delicately found his teammate with a cute cross for a tidy first time finish from Mount.
But the 26-year-old offered much more than a single goal at Molineux as his link-up play with Matheus Cunha, Fernandes and Mbeumo carved open the Wolves squad continuously, showing how effective mount can be.
His performance has caught the attention of talkSPORT presenter Jeff Stelling, who said on Tuesday morning, “Mason Mount was excellent for United last night.
“I thought he was the standout player on the pitch by quite the distance. Actually, a tester said I think he’ll be England’s number 10 for the World Cup next year.”
“Well, I don’t agree with that, but it’s a question of whether he can force himself in… Why not even at this late stage?”
In response to Stelling, Gabby Agbonlahor said, “If he can get a run of games and perform like he did last night, Thomas Tuchel will be aware of Mount. He’ll know what he can do and what he did at Chelsea.”
“His passing was spot on. His finish from [Bruno] Fernandes – he’s got a great ball in behind. He just needs a run of games now. Can you keep playing and stay in the side, then why not?”
Tuchel is not afraid to make changes
Since his arrival as the England manager, Thomas Tuchel has called up a range of profiles to the squad in the hopes of having a good enough understanding of all the potential options.
Most recently, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott received his first call-up, so a plan to add Mount to the system should not be ruled out, especially with question marks over who is most ideal to be the midfield trio heading into 2026.

England’s next and final camp before the World Cup comes late in March, giving Mount time to prove that he can be consistent and effective on Amorim’s side to earn his chance to put on an England shirt again.
His positive history with Tuchel, winning the Champions League together at Chelsea, also works in Mount’s favour as he presumably has a strong relationship with Tuchel, and the manager would know how impactful Mount can be.
