Gary Neville has urged Ruben Amorim to sign one player at Manchester United this summer after his incredible performances in the Champions League.
Manchester United are expected to be busy in the upcoming summer transfer window to try and bolster the options at Ruben Amorim’s disposal.
There are several priority positions for the United boss, particularly in attack. Amorim needs a centre-forward and options to play in the duel no.10 positions.
However, it is also recognised that the wingback positions in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system are so important. Patrick Dorgu was signed in January but further reinforcements could be added.
There haven’t been too many options linked with United for those positions but Gary Neville believes that there is a standout option Amorim must consider.
Neville urges Amorim to sign incredible Dumfries
Following on from the Champions League games this week, Neville highlighted Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries as a standout player.
The Dutchman was one of the best performers over the two legs against Barcelona, scoring twice and assisting three goals in the stunning 7-6 win on aggregate.
Neville said that he would ‘love’ to see Dumfries playing in the Premier League, and more specifically for his former side United.
“Do you know what I kept thinking? I was thinking about United playing in their back five with the wingbacks, I was thinking about that right wingback Dumfries for United,” the ex-defender said on the Stick to Football podcast.
“I’d like to see him in the Premier League. He’s so good at right wingback.”
United were previously linked to the 29-year-old defender when Erik ten Hag was in charge but a move never materialised and he signed a new deal at Inter earlier this season.
United move for Dumfries feels unlikely
Despite the comments from Neville, a move for the £34 million-rated Dumfries seems very unlikely this summer due to multiple factors.
Firstly, at 29 years of age, the Dutch star simply doesn’t seem to fit the age-profile of player INEOS are looking for at Old Trafford. There has not been a single signing over the age of 26 since they took charge.
Also, you have to look at the situation objectively. Dumfries is heading to his second Champions League final with Inter in the last three years and recently signed a new deal. Convincing him of a move to a struggling United side would be difficult enough.
Instead, it seems like United will be targeting younger players and we could even see Amad used in that position more often heading into the new season, while an extra attacking player is signed.
