“He is…” Sir Jim Ratcliffe reveals honest thoughts on Rúben Amorim in three-word verdict
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has issued his honest thoughts on Rúben Amorim after the 39-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag as Manchester United’s head coach.
Rúben Amorim was named Manchester United’s new head coach in November, taking over from Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman’s tenure ended in disappointment.
Ten Hag was dismissed at the end of October following a disastrous run that left United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in their Europa League group, far below the club’s standards.

Amorim’s induction to United was delayed after issues surrounding his release clause saw the 39-year-old instated two weeks after the club’s announcement. He has since managed five fixtures, winning two, drawing one, and losing two.
While United awaited for Amorim., Ruud van Nistelrooy served as interim manager, guiding the team to three wins and a draw. He stepped aside to clear the way for Amorim and his newly installed coaching staff at Carrington, and has since been appointed as manager of Leicester City.
Ratcliffe’s thoughts on Amorim
While the appointment of Amorim at Old Trafford was primerally driven by CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, sign-off had to be given by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe before the move went through.
United paid around £10 million to Sporting to secure Amorim and his backroom staff from the Liga Portugal side. When Ten Hag’s compensation was factored in, the total amount paid for the change sits at around £20 million.
Speaking recently, Ratcliffe was asked about United’s overall objectives and if they had changed once they chose to sack Ten Hag and appoint the Portuguese as the new head coach.
“The objective is unchanged,” Ratcliffe told United We Stand. “The measure of success unchanged. We always need to be challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League.
“The size of the task is considerable, and to get there, a lot of things have to change at United.”
Further, he went on to praise Amorim, explaining that the boss is fantastic, intelligent, and thoughtful.
“We have a fantastic coach. He is intelligent, thoughtful. We have a great chief executive in Omar. We’re on the way, but this won’t happen overnight. There are financial issues which we need to address because we’ve inherited a financial situation that only time will solve.”
