Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shared his verdict on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim’s decision to send Marcus Rashford on loan to Aston Villa in January.

Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United last November and one of his first major decisions involved star forward Marcus Rashford.

The United boss ended up freezing Rashford out of the team until the January transfer window, where he was loaned to Aston Villa.

Despite scoring four goals in the early weeks under Amorim, the United forward departed due to various factors, including an interview he conducted where he said he’d be open to a new challenge.

Amorim would continuously say that the decision to leave Rashford out of the team was due to training performances.

Ratcliffe backs Amorim over Rashford decision

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has conducted an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap this week where he discussed his first year in charge of the club.

In that interview, Neville asked the United co-owner whether he backed Amorim’s decision to send players like Rashford on loan in January.

“Correct, I do,” responded Ratcliffe. “I think he’s doing the right thing with the players.

“He has to be in charge of the dressing room. He has got a set of principles and he wants the players to abide by his set of principles which is that you have to be totally and utterly commited to winning the next football match, that’s what he wants.

“If you abide by those principles, you potentially have a seat in the dressing room.”

Ratcliffe says United players aren’t good enough

The decision to send Rashford on loan is something that remains controversial within the United fanbase, particularly because of the difficulties United are facing at the moment.

Amorim’s side are struggling in the goalscoring department, and Rasmus Højlund has now gone 20 games without scoring.

Ratcliffe believes that many members of the squad are not up to standards but says that it will be a longer process to fix that.

Speaking to the BBC, he added: “Some [United players] are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mold the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.”
